The news that just came out of West Virginia best sums up what is happening in the Republican Party this year. In a self destructive move, extreme conservatives are working overtime to defeat John McCain and today John McCain supporters fought back. When it became clear that John McCain could not win the West Virginia Convention, they decided to throw their support behind Mike Huckabee in order to make sure that Mitt Romney lost. It is hard to blame people that support John McCain for being angry at Mitt Romney supporters as this years campaign has become very dirty.
Conservative talk radio has been dumping on McCain hard for weeks now trying to get voters to support Mitt Romney instead of McCain. While I personally do not like John McCain either, what conservative talk radio has done is take the Republican Party into a civil war. No one is going to take day in and day out abuse from people like Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity without fighting back and once Republicans start turning on each other, there will be little hope for victory in November. There is little doubt as to who is responsible for this GOP civil war and that person is Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh is a conservative purest that treats conservatism like a religion rather than a political movement.
What Rush Limbaugh wants as a presidential candidate is someone that cannot win in a general election anymore. In a perfect world, Rush Limbaugh and other extremist conservatives would start their own party where die-hard conservatives could try and find the next Ronald Reagan. Instead of the GOP continuing to move further and further to right, the party is moving to the middle which is a place that extreme conservatives will never staying for a prolong period of time. Like I have said before, if Ronald Reagan was running for President in 2008, Rush Limbaugh would probably not support him either because at some point in Reagans past he worked with Democrats and raised taxes. To make matters even worse, Reagan not only worked with Democrats in the past – but he was one himself. That would certainly make Ronald Reagan an unacceptable candidate to Rush Limbaugh.
It is becoming hard to listen to Rush Limbaugh preach on day after day against John McCain, so I have taken a break from his daily broadcast. The last time I took such a break was back when he was calling Republicans that wanted to let Terry Schiavo die with dignity, murderers.
