Dan Rather's Lawsuit Should Be Thrown Out

Years after Dan Rather was forced out at CBS News, today he filed a lawsuit against his former employer trying to point the finger of blame at them and away from himself for his termination. Everyone that has followed the career of Dan Rather understands that he is a tough talker from Texas, but this lawsuit is crazy and more than likely a judge will throw it out before it ever sees the inside of a courtroom. I was asking myself today why Dan Rather would file a lawsuit against CBS News and the first thing that came to my mind was the name Don Imus. I'm sure Dan Rather knows, just like the rest of us, that CBS was eager to settle a wrongful termination lawsuit, brought by Don Imus, for millions of dollars and now it appears that Dan Rather would like to have a little extra cash of his own for his retirement years.

Without a doubt Dan Rather is the most stubborn man to ever sit in an anchor chair for one of the big three broadcast networks. Even when his audience was dropping, he refused to admit that it was he, Dan Rather, that folks were turning away from and not the CBS Network. Then when Dan Rather ramrodded a false story about President Bush's service in the National Guard during the Vietnam War, Dan Rather's career as the anchor of the CBS Evening News was over for good. In reality, CBS News was more than kind to keep Dan Rather around for several years after it was clear that his audience was not going to be coming back. Now Dan Rather is repaying CBS by slapping them with a multi million dollar lawsuit for wrongful termination.

I remember hearing a story once about how Dan Rather refused to let Walter Cronkite back on the set after Walter's retirement. While I don't know if this story is true, if it is it speak volumes about what makes Dan Rather tick down deep inside. To let an asset like Walter Cronkite go unused because of petty jealousy is something that CBS should have put a stop to early on in Dan Rather's career, as anchor, at the CBS Evening News. However, nothing was done about Dan Rather's decision and Walter Cronkite was never used again on the CBS Evening News set after he retired as "the most trusted man in America". Now Dan Rather is out at CBS News and I don't remember hearing anyone currently employed there wanting him to come back and do special reports for the network mainly because he, Dan Rather, gave them all a black eye with the shady way he handled the George W. Bush National Guard story right before the 2004 presidential election.

Someone told me once that some times less is more and if that is true, it certainly applies to Dan Rather. I would prefer to see him less and not more as he lives out the remaining years of his life. From "golden boy" at the JFK assassination in Dallas, to the face of the Evening News at CBS, to finally a bitter old man wanting revenge - Dan Rather has had an interesting and mostly successful life, but it is time for him to leave the public arena for good.
